Job Title: Editorial Director

Chaloner is partnering with The Center for Reproductive Rights on their search for an Editorial Director to be based in their New York City office.

About the Position: The Editorial Director will drive the organization's overarching vision and narrative that encompasses all of the Center's channels such as its storytelling initiatives, publications, website and other platforms. S/he will be responsible for determining and pulling the key story lines through all channels and across global audience outreach. This position oversees the day-to-day operations of the editorial department and manages a team of editors and writers. The Editorial Director will report to the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer and support the organization's domestic and global programs.

 This position will be based in New York City. 

 Responsibilities:

 The Editorial Director's primary job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage and set vision and strategy for all writing and editing for the Center: thought leadership (speeches and op-eds), publications, marketing materials, website content and more.
  • Strategic planning for publications and editorial content across marketing and communications platforms;
  • Set highest standards of excellence for voice, quality, consistency, and accuracy. Develop and maintain best practices for the organization;
  • Produce high-level donor marketing materials and communications to support development;
  • Partner with the creative and digital teams to integrate stories visibly on the organization's front-end curation and back-end publishing tools;
  • Oversight of content development including short-form copywriting, on-site curation, branded social media and long form and prose for all audiences;
  • Work with various teams within the organization to produce high quality content and targeted distribution strategies to drive awareness back to the organization;
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the editorial department; support rapid response communications as needed;
  • Create and build the new editorial function/team within the organization;
  • Manage and mentor a high functioning, agile team of editors and writers with expertise in storytelling, writing for web, executive communications and communications for a global audience;
  • Work with C-level and senior staff on executive communications and thought leadership needs;
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer (CMCO) and the department and organization;
  • Set key metrics, track how editorial content is used, report on insights and adapt as needed;
  • Seek outside editorial partnerships, in tandem with media team so content supports their goals and reaches key audiences;

 Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years of editorial and writing experience with direct team management;
  • Exceptional writing, editing and messaging skills;
  • Successful track record of developing and leading editorial strategies and storytelling in an advocacy/fundraising/NGO environment;
  • Proven experience in editorial campaign strategy for a global audience;
  • Strong verbal communication skills;
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, problem-solving, and mentoring skills, and a calm, diplomatic demeanor'even in times of intense pressure;
  • Experience managing a three+ person team required;
  • Proficiency with project management tools; experience with Asana a plus;
  • Extremely sharp organizational skills and ability to manage large volumes of projects, tasks, and files effectively simultaneously;
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced environment with a wide variety of strong personalities; sense of humor;
  • Ability to travel within and outside the U.S. as needed.

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Advanced degree communications, journalism or related field highly preferred.
