The Center for Reproductive Rights Communications team is seeking a full-time project manager to join a dynamic multi-disciplinary communications team. The Director Communication Projects is fully responsible for the success of communications initiatives by defining project roles and responsibilities, ensuring projects are adequately resourced and staffed. The Director creates and manages project plans for the department that encompass various combinations of digital and print communications, media outreach, events and advocacy aimed at marketing the Center's brand, raising the organization's visibility and public support for its high-stakes court and advocacy battles. The Director is the key translator of projects from a creative idea into a manageable reality of objectives, activities, tasks and outcomes in line with institutional and departmental goals and priorities. The Director is responsible for understanding why individual projects exist, what business problem the project is trying to solve and what methods and resources are going to solve that problem.

The Director of Communication Projects must be self-assured and comfortable speaking to all levels of authority within the organization; collaborative and adaptable in that they can respect and listen to others' opinions even when s/he disagrees; resourceful and tenacious, thinking outside the box to solve problems; pragmatic, knowledgeable of what resources are available to complete a project; and upbeat and optimistic with a good sense of humor.

The ideal candidate is a great, detail-oriented strategist capable of working across disciplines and managing multiple complex array of communications tools; is knowledgeable of the specific skill sets involved in creative and production processes for both print and digital projects, and the time it takes to complete tasks; and possesses soft people skills to build relationships and trust with key players, and strong hands-on skills for ensuring timely completion of quality communications products. 

The Director of Communication Projects reports to the Senior Director of Communications and serves as that role's second-in-command.

This position will be based in New York City.

Responsibilities:

The Director of Communication Projects' primary job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing and owning communication team's multi-disciplinary and multi-departmental marketing projects from creative approval through production;
  • Defining the scope of work for projects, creating project plans, and identifying and assigning tasks, and pinpointing milestones and deadlines with input from the digital, media relations and marketing teams and key players within external departments;
  • Serving as the primary contact along with the Departmental Assistant for program teams when they wish to work with Communications; and closely monitoring progress on all ongoing projects, meet with staff regularly to ensure progress is being made and deadlines will be met, and respond as need when exigencies arise that threaten timely completion of all tasks;
  • Providing key players with clear direction that creates understanding of expectation and how performance is measured;
  • Maintaining and identifying ways to improve the current department project management system to track status and workflow of projects;
  • Working with the Senior Director of Communications and the Departmental Assistant to develop and maintain the department's budget, coordinate the work of the staff members across the department in producing budget requests and reports;
  • Navigating process and risks, balancing workflow between projects and among resources;
  • Getting key players to commit to delegated tasks and identifying gaps in progress of individuals towards accomplishing tasks and providing feedback in a positive manner;
  • Identifying projects that are not able to be accomplished and making adjustments as needed by either breaking down into smaller tasks, reconsidering the task or assigning additional resources to complete the task;
  • Providing regular progress updates to key players, and ensuring open and effective communication throughout the development and execution of every project;
  • Working with team members to redefine individual priorities so that work can be redistributed to provide greater opportunities to help the entire team;
  • Cultivating a high-performing team by creating and maintaining a training schedule for staff and develop policies and procedures to support the success of internal and external projects; and
  • Providing feedback and analysis to the Senior Director of Communications on workflow and areas of improvement in future projects.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10+ years of experience with management of multi-disciplinary communications project planning, including identifying goals, audiences, communications tools to successfully complete initiatives; overseeing the workflow; traffic coordination or project management in communications and/or creative marketing;
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of processes for press, print, and digital communications and design;
  • Strong verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively;
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, problem-solving, and mentoring skills, and a calm, diplomatic demeanor'even in times of intense pressure;
  • Proficiency with project management tools; experience with Asana a plus;
  • Extremely sharp organizational skills and ability to manage large volumes of projects, tasks, and files;
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced environment with a wide variety of strong personalities; sense of humor;
  • Ability to travel as needed;
  • Agency and nonprofit experience preferred;
  • Strong commitment to the Center's mission, values, and strategic objectives;
  • Bachelor's degree required; and
  • Advanced degree in communications, marketing, journalism or related field highly preferred.
